The Pituitary Gland

The amount of each hormone that is circulating in your blood stream rises and falls in daily, monthly and yearly cycles. Many of these cycles are coordinated by a part of your brain called the pituitary gland. The pituitary sends signals to the ovaries, adrenal, and thyroid glands and tells them when and how much of their hormones to make. It functions like the conductor of an orchestra who coordinates the action of each individual orchestra member. The pituitary gland “listens to” each hormone, and then sends signals to the gland that makes the hormone and guides it to make more or less of the hormone.

Sometimes your pituitary gland has a hard time “hearing” the hormones that it regulates. The pituitary gland can stop listening to a hormone when that hormone has been elevated for a long time, or when you take the hormone from the outside. When you take hormones not made by your own body, the pituitary gland first tries to regulate the hormone, but then stops listening when it realizes that it can’t influence the level of the hormone. This phenomenon is common when people take birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy.
